[인물 누구] 미국 신임 국무장관 폼페이오(Pompeo)… 이탈리아 혈통, 하버드대 로스쿨

[글로벌이코노믹 김대호 주필/ 경제학 박사] 미국의 새 국무장관에 마이크 폼페이오가 올랐다.

폼페이오의 영어 풀 네임은 Michael Richard Pompeo다. 1963년에 태어났다. 올해로 53세가 된다. 부모는 이탈리아계다.
출생지는 캘리포니아 주 오린지(Orange). 로스 아미고스(Los Amigos High School) 고교를 거쳐 육군사관학교에 진학했다. 학창시절 배구선수로 활약하기도 했다. 육군사관학교에서의 전공은 기계공학이다. 육사를 반 수석으로 졸업했다.

이후 군에서 장교로 근무했다. 군에서의 근무이력은 다음과 같다. From 1986 to 1991, Pompeo served in the U.S. Army as an Armor Branch cavalry officer, reaching the rank of captain. He served as a United States Cavalry officer patrolling the Iron Curtain before the fall of the Berlin Wall. He also served with the 2nd Squadron, 7th Cavalry in the 4th Infantry Division in the Gulf War. 걸프전에 참전하기도 했다

2011년 캔자스 주에서 하원 의원으로 당선되어 2017년까지 정치인으로 활약했다. 2017년 트럼프 대통령에 의해 미국 CIA 국장으로 발탁됐다. He has been Director of the Central Intelligence Agency since January 23, 2017, after being nominated by President Donald Trump. Previously, he was the member of the United States House of Representatives for Kansas's 4th congressional district from 2011 to 2017.

그는 의회 의정생활을 할 때 보수 극단주의 정치인 모임으로 유명한 티파티의 회원으로 활약했다. 이 티파티 모임을 주도한 펜스 부통령과 특히 가깝다. 펜스 부통령의 사람으로 분류되기도 한다. He was a member of the Tea Party movement within the Republican Party. He was a Kansas representative on the Republican National Committee and a member of the Italian American Congressional Delegation.

폼페이오는 비즈니스맨으로의 이력도 있다. 1998년 육사 출신 동창들과 함께 타이어 스페이스(Thayer Aerospace) 등 회사를 설립했다. In 1998, along with other West Point alumni, Pompeo founded Thayer Aerospace and Private Security, which received a 2% investment from Koch Industries. In 2006, he sold his interest in Thayer, at which point it was renamed Nex-Tech Aerospace, and became president of Sentry International, an oilfield equipment company, which was also a partner with Koch Industries.

미국 백악관 홈페이지에 소개된 폼페이오의 프로필을 보면 캘리포니아에서 태어나 1986년 미 육군사관학교를 졸업하고 미 육군으로 복무했다. 이후 하버드 법대에 진학했으며 1994년 졸업했다. 이어 2010년, 2012년, 2014년, 2016년에 내리 당선돼 공화당 하원의원을 지냈으며트럼프 당시 대통령 당선인에 의해 CIA 국장으로 발탁됐다고 되어 있다.
미국 국무부 장관 후보자의 공식 임명 절차는 이르면 다음 달 말에나 마무리될 것으로 보인다. 국회 청문회와 인준 절차가 남아있다. 국무부의 정식 폼페이오 체제는 4월 말이나 가능할 것으로 보인다.

폼페이오는 지난해 CIA 국장 상원 인준 표결에서 찬성 66표, 반대 32표를 얻었다.
